No visible signature, the baptism of Christ by Saint John, School of Lorraine, ca. 1600, oil on canvas, 70 x 92 cm
St. John the Baptist standing in a contrapposto baptizing the Christ, standing in a reciprocal pose, while the Holy Ghost shines his light.
Probably ca. 1600 as there is some influence of mannerism and early baroque compositional schemes.
Condition: A semi-restored crack of 33 cm length (running from the Holy Ghost over the right upper part of the figure of Christ).
Semi-restored minor crack near the right arm of the figure of Christ along the trunk of the tree.
Semi-restored crack and flaking of the pigment layer near the mantle coat of Saint John.
Some overpaint on both the figures and the upper part of the sky.
Marouflaged linen on a wooden panel in the upper part (as can be seen at the back of the painting Cf. added photographs).
Fortification of the canvas of the landscape on the left side of Christ.
Despite the restorations in good condition.
