Condition: - use of bitumen paint all over
- dry cracks all over
- the varnish darkened
- above the crying figure a large (restored) vertical tear
- a (restored) horizontal tear situated to the hat the conscript holds in his hand
- some more horizontal tears to the right side
- the top edge with several visible nail holes in the canvas
- overpainted areas
- the work is in a rather poor condition and needs professional restoration.
