The engineering prize medals to James Leslie F.R.S.E. (1801-1899): The Institution of Civil Engineers Telford Medal, frosted silver, 58 mm, head of Telford left, rev. a view of the Menai suspension bridge with shipping passing beneath it, in silver frame with watch glass to the reverse (obverse glass missing), frame edge inscribed (JAMES LESLIE, M. INST. C.E. 1840.), by W. Wyon, in fitted case (E 1206), some discolouration, and scuffing to the frosting, otherwise nearly extremely fine; The Royal Scottish Society of Arts silver award medal, 48 mm, bust of Athena right, rev., name and award details engraved within a wreath (...FOR INCLINED PLANE FOR BOATS AT BLACKHILL ON MONKLAND CANAL...1851..), good very fine or better; International Fisheries Exhibition Edinburgh 1882, silver award medals (2), 45 mm, view of Edinburgh Castle, exergue with exhibition title, rev. award details engraved within a wreath (CLASS IV AWARDED TO JAMES LESLIE C.E. EDINBURGH FOR DESIGNS OF SALMON PASSES and CLASS X AWARDED TO J&A LESLIE EDINBURGH FOR THE PURIFICATION OF SEWAGE FROM MILLS), some contact marks to engraved areas, otherwise about extremely fine. Nephew of John Leslie and father to Alexander (see lots 60 and 62). Educated at Edinburgh University. Specialised in docks, water works and associated disciplines. Went into partnership with his son in 1871 as J&A Leslie.
