Three folio volumes each being the First Edition, measuring approx. 16x10 inches, bound in full leather of the period, spines are uniform [with slight variation in the placement of the labels and raised bands] but the leather on the boards differs slightly; each bearing the armorial bookplate of the "Earl of Rosebery", so the set is from a single original owner; the fifth Earl was a prominent liberal politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom 1894-1895; each volume complete as issued (half-titles lacking), with a large engraved frontispiece of Lord Clarendon, page edges stained red; internally Near Fine, text blocks square and tight, pages clean and unmarked; there is mild rubbing to edges and corners of the boards, all bindings firm and tight, outer joints show some short cracks, all spine labels intact; all in all, an attractive and authentic set in close to Near Fine condition
