First edition of these minutes concerning the reinstatement of theater censorship.
It was passed unanimously by the members of the Ministry of the Interior’s commission on January 28, 1849, but was not implemented until July 1850. In the meantime, a commission of the Council of State was tasked with gathering documents that might assist it in its work and with conducting inquiries among relevant experts. The commission met six times to hear testimony from 31 individuals: 11 playwrights or composers, including Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo. Among the documents gathered on theaters in Paris and the provinces are: operating licenses, surety bonds, bankruptcy records, theater seating capacities, theater companies, etc.
