Theodor Baierl

At the last judgement

Oil on panel. 81.5 x 63.5 cm.
Signed lower right: THEODOR BAIERL.

Theodor Baierl, a pupil of the painter Franz von Stuck, was regarded as early as 1924 as an example of the fact “that there are, and always have been, people who do not actually live in the present – that is, in and with the time into which they were born – but seem to be remnants of centuries long past.” (op. cit. Braungart 1924, p. 161).
Employing old-master techniques and themes, the artist created paintings that “seem to have been painted not in Munich around 1920, but in Milan, Florence or Perugia around 1480 or 1500.” (R. Braungart 1924, p.164).

This is also the case with the present painting, which focuses on a group of ascending figures, presumably in the context of the biblical depiction of the Last Judgement. This is indicated by a drawing of the same scene, entitled ‘At the Last Judgement’, which was sold at Dreweatts in 2009.

Provenance

Aquired from the artists estate. - For several generations in private collection, Rhineland.

Literature

about the artist see: R. Braungart: Theodor Baierl, in: Die Kunst für Alle, XXXIX (1924), p. 160-173.
