Dezember 1840 in Imst, Tirol. Theodor von Hörmann (1840–1895) was an Austrian landscape painter and is considered one of the first impressionists in Austria. He was born on December 13, 1840 in Imst, Tyrol. Hörmann originally pursued a military career and took part in the campaigns of 1859 and 1866 before studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1873 to 1875 under Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach. As early as 1875 he became a teacher of freehand drawing and fencing at a military school. His study trip to Paris (1886–1890) had a strong influence on his painting style, as he dealt with the Impressionists. Back in Austria, he lived in Znojmo and Vienna, among other places, where he became a member of the Künstlerhaus in 1895. His work shows landscapes that are often enlivened with figures and are characterized by strong colors that initially received little recognition. Hörmann changed his style towards the end of his life and found recognition, although this only came fully after his death in 1895. He died on July 1, 1895 in Graz on a trip to Italy. His artistic legacy is recognized as an important contribution to the Austrian Impressionism movement. Further artists and styles: Impressionism, Emil Jakob Schindler, Anselm Feuerbach, Carl Moll, Gustav Klimt, landscape painting, Barbizon School, Camille Corot, Charles-François Daubigny, Carl Schuch
