French school of the 19th century, follower of Théodule Ribot (1823 - 1891) . Saint Sebastian Martyr, from the painting in the Musée d'Orsay. The work, exhibited at the Salon of 1865, was a huge success and was acquired by the French state. Exceptional oil on canvas of large dimensions (100x130cm) sold unframed. The scene represents Saint Sebastian, abandoned after his martyrdom at the foot of the tree where the executioners had tied him. Saint Irene and one of her servants draw arrows from her body. Work in good condition. Canvas and original frame. Small restorations, accidents. Bears an inscription (to be deciphered) at the bottom right. Provenance: public sale, Paris.
