Thierry Mugler. A rare Thierry Mugler black gabardine suit with sheer insertions...
Thierry Mugler.
A rare Thierry Mugler black gabardine suit with sheer insertions, Spring 1998 Couture, Look 33, as seen on the runway, comprising a sharply tailored jacket with peaked lapels, covered button fastening, and sheer flame-shaped panels to the shoulders and décolletage; and a matching fitted skirt with corresponding sheer flame motifs, labelled Thierry Mugler Paris, Made in France, Italian size 46 (approx. UK 14), 100% worsted wool, contrasting fabric 100% polyamide/nylon, lining 100% acetate.
Cf. Thierry Mugler, Spring/Summer 1998, a black jacket and skirt ensemble with sheer zebra-pattern cut-outs, held in the collection of the Palais Galliera, Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris. [Link Here]
Grade A-B
Provenance: An Important Private Collection
Notes:
Thierry Mugler's work was defined by an architectural approach to dress, using precise tailoring and exaggerated proportions to reshape the female silhouette. Broad shoulders, sharply controlled waists, and body-conscious construction became signatures of the house, combining traditional tailoring with a distinctly futuristic and theatrical sensibility.
Presented in Paris in January 1998, the Spring collection explored the relationship between concealment and exposure through transparent inserts, cut-outs, and sculptural construction. The present ensemble is a particularly graphic example: flame-like sheer panels travel from the jacket across the décolletage and reappear on the skirt, creating continuity between the two garments and revealing the body as an integral part of the design.
Shown on the runway as a complete ensemble, the design demonstrates Mugler's ability to balance rigorous construction with provocative transparency, characteristic of his late-1990s work.
