£3,000

Third Reich SA (Sturmabteilung) Dress Dagger with Dedication to Blade for the Opening of the Adolf Hitler Bridge across the Rhine River at Krefeld-Uerdingen on 7th June 1936.
The dagger is a standard SA man's dagger with brown wooden grip, nickel silver eagle and enamel SA device. Housed in its original anodised scabbard, which is missing most of its finish. The lower chape mount is dented and cracked. The blade remains in near mint condition, the obverse has the standard motto, 'Alles fur Deutschland' and is also engraved 'Zweitanfertigung fur Gruppenfuhrer Knickmann'. The reverse of the blade has makers trademark of SMF, Solingen and also has a five line engraved dedication, 'Mit diesem Dolch aus Krefelder Edelstahl durchschnitt der Stellvertreter des Fuhrers, Pg. Reichsminister Rudolf Hess anlasslich der Verkebrsubergabe der Adolf Hitler-Rheinbrucke in Krefield- Uerdingen am 7. Juni 1936 das Sperrband.' Which translates to 'With this dagger made of Krefeld stainless steel, the deputy of the Führer, Reich Minister Rudolf Hess, cut the barrier tape on the occasion of the opening of the Adolf Hitler Rhine Bridge in Krefeld-Uerdingen on June 7, 1936'. The blade has much of the original cross graining remaining and is in very good condition overall. Blade measures 22cms, overall 37cms.
The Krefeld-Uerdingen bridge is one of the most famous of the bridges over the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the time of the Third Reich, the NSDAP were keen to show of the might of the German people by producing bridges and structures which would be marvelled by the rest of the world. The plans for the bridge were brought forward in 1933 and work began on the bridge soon after approval. The bridge was opened on the 7th June 1936 to typical fanfare of the party, with Rudolf Hess cutting the ceremonial rope, officially opening the bridge. As with many bridges in Germany, it was originally named after the leader of the party, Adolf Hitler. This was a well known event, it is believed that a few of these specially dedicated SA daggers were produced with the same inscription to present to leading members of the SA and political organisations in the area. This may well be the dagger produced for SA Gruppenfuhrer Knickmann.
