Place Published: Monterey, CA
Publisher:Colton & Semple
Date Published: Saturday, August 29, 1846
Description:

Vol. I, No. 3. 4 pp. In two columns, on single folded sheet. 31.8x21.5 cm (12½x8½").

The rare third issue of California's first newspaper, published by Monterey Alcalde Walter Colton and his friend Robert B. Semple, printed on the well-used Ramage printing press that Agustín V. Zamorano brought from Hawaii to Monterey in 1834. Printed just two weeks after the first issue came out on August 15, 1846, this third issue contains a good deal of historically significant content. The front page contains nearly two columns on actions in the Bear Flag Revolt, "...Castro was at the head of a large party, with the intention of attacking Capt. Fremont, who was at that time encamped at the Buts, near the junction of Feather River with the Sacramento... all the Americans... rushed in to assist Capt. Fremont..." There is also news of the "Emigration to California - A large party of settlers propose leaving Arkansas for California next May... Every person starting is expected to be well armed with a rifle or heavy shot gun... Two hundred Mormons residing in Wanef Oakland and Lapeer counties, Mich., have lately left to join their brethren now about emigrating to California..." There are also more mundane matters, such as "complaining of some nuisances and riding at speed across the bridges. We spoke to the Acalde, who says that they shall be remedied at once," and " liquor, in considerable quantity, has been sold to our sailors during the week; quite a number have been found intoxicated, noisy and turbulent..." And much more of interest.
Condition Report: A few edge tears and chips, three slightly longer tears with old tape repairs; old folds with tiny holes at a few fold intersections; very good.
