James Victor Rae Jackson was born on 28 April 1883. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 18 January 1902, and served with the 2nd Buffs in South Africa, taking part in operations in the Transvaal from March to 31 May 1902 (Medal with 4 clasps). From March 1909 until September 1913, he was employed with the West African Frontier Force. He was appointed Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion on 4 August 1914.
Jackson served as Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion during the Great War, going to France on 24 February 1915. He was wounded, and was taken prisoner at the Hohenzollern Redoubt on 30 September 1915. Jackson had just assumed temporary command of the battalion when his position was overrun, whilst awaiting reinforcements, and he ‘could not emerge from a deep dug-out near the gap from which he was conducting operations, and he was taken prisoner’. He was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 1 January 1916, but remained interned until he was repatriated on 13 September 1917. After his return he was specially appointed Brigade Major and 2nd in command of an Officer Cadet Battalion, June 1918 to February 1919, and was an Instructor at the Small Arms School from November 1919 to May 1924. He assumed command of the 1st Battalion in April 1931 and commanded the regiment throughout the operations in Burma (Medal and clasp). Promoted to Colonel in April 1935, Jackson took command of the Infantry Record and Pay Office at Hounslow. He was, in his capacity as commanding Officer of the Buffs, awarded the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, Knight 2nd class.

Note: The Order of the Dannebrog insignia in this lot has been added to complete the group, the original insignia awarded to Jackson being returnable upon the death of the recipient.
