Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham, NWS,
Irish 1823-1875-

Vietri;

pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, titled, and dated 'Vietri. / T L Rowbotham / 1874' (lower left), 18 x 47 cm.

Provenance:
with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London.
where purchased by the present owner.

Note:
Rowbotham was the son of Thomas Leeson Scrase Rowbotham (1783-1853), also a watercolourist, and with whom he collaborated on publications, including 'The Art of Landscape Painting in Watercolours', and 'The Art of Sketching from Nature'. Many of Rowbotham's pictures depict landscapes across Europe, with the artist clearly particularly attracted to the coasts and lakesides of Italy, to which he returned repeatedly throughout his career. The present work illustrates Vietri sul Mare, in the Campania region of Southern Italy, with the strong sunlight effectively evoked by the artist's generous use of white pigment on the buildings.
