Thomas Dawes - Northampton : An 18thC oak cased 8-day longcase clock with 12" brass dial having strike / silent to arch. c. 1760. The whole standing approx. 88" high
Thomas Dawes of Northampton (f.1726, d.1773) was the leading clockmaker in the town during the middle of the 18th Century. He worked from premises in The Drapery until his death in 1773, when his former apprentice and son in law, Francis Eck took over the business. He is best known for the gilded gallery clock he made for All Saints parish church Northampton, which can be seen on the west gallery. When he died the Northampton Mercury obituary described him as "A watchmaker of great note of this town".
