Thomas Foley (American, b. 1887) and Jack Patton (American, 1900-1962) Political Halloween Preparations, Minneapolis Star newspaper cartoon and The Family Jewels Are on His Nose, Dallas Journal newspaper cartoon (two works), October 30, 1933; May 1935 India ink, lithographic crayon, and gouache on heavyweight paper 14 x 12 inches (35.6 x 30.5 cm) (Political Halloween Preparations, image) 14 x 10-3x4 inches (35.6 x 27.3 cm) (The Family Jewels, image) Each signed in lower region: Foley; Patton Thomas Henry Foley was the editorial cartoonist of the Minneapolis Star newspaper in the 1920s and 1930s; in 1924 the newspaper ran a full-page boasting that "only one Minneapolis newspaper has a cartoonist" and that Mr. Foley's cartoons and comics are a daily feature. Political Halloween Preparations by Thomas Foley was published in the Star on October 30, 1933. Republican elephant labeled "Little Willie G.O.P." can't seem to work up much effective "administration criticism" in the face of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's popularity and the success of the Democrats in the 1932 election. A winged female figure that was likely a regular feature of Mr. Foley's work appears at lower right. On the back is a second finished original cartoon by the artist of similar vintage that likely went unpublished. Jackson Ingersoll Patton was an editorial cartoonist whose work appeared in the Dallas Journal, Dispatch, and Dallas Morning News. He joined the staff of the Journal in 1918 drawing comic strips and editorial cartoons; after 1920 the latter often appeared on the front page. His comic strips of the 1920s and 1930s included The Restless Age and Dolly Burns, later renamed Spencer Easley; some saw limited syndication. Notably, beginning in 1926 he drew Texas History Movies, a comic strip that ran 428 episodes and was collected for book publication. In 1941 Mr. Patton signed on at the Dallas Morning News where his work appeared for the next 20 years. "Big Business," the Republican elephant and assorted irate citizens ineffectively jeer from the infield as President Franklin D. Roosevelt astride the New Deal donkey take a commanding lead over the thoroughbreds in The Family Jewels Are on His Nose by Jack Patton. It was published in May 1935 in the Journal when FDR was riding high and launching the "Second New Deal," creating the Works Progress Administration, Social Security, the National Labor Relations Board and introducing a wealth tax on high earners and corporations.
