Thomas Gardiner made several voyages to India and China aboard the East India Company's ships Duke of York and Asia. He was the purser on the H. C. S. Asia when she sailed to Madras, Bengal, and China in 1831-32. An oil painting of the H.C.S. Asia by Wiliam Huggins, as well as Gardiner's journals of his voyages, are in the collection of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England.
