Thomas Hart Benton Signed Photograph Depicting Artist in His Studio
A vintage black and white photograph of important American painter Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975), signed by him as "Thomas H. Benton" in blue ink along the bottom margin. The photograph shows the artist seated backwards in a chair in his Kansas City, Missouri art studio, grasping eyeglasses in one hand, and a pair of paint brushes in the other. Expected surface wear including a few wrinkles, else near fine. 7" x 9.5." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.
One of Benton's paintings is visible in the background of the photograph: his large tempera on canvas entitled "Apple of Discord" (ca. 1947-1949), currently in the Williams Collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The painting depicts a folksy interpretation of Adam and Eve and the tree of knowledge (see attached image.) Many of Benton's Americana murals can be seen at the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut.
