Note: The Gallatin family had a home near Thomas Moran's East Hampton studio and had a close relationship with the artist. Albert Eugene Gallatin (1881-1952), began collecting art at age 17, and would become a groundbreaking collector and critic, and eventually a modernist artist in his own right. Gallatin acquired A Cloudy Day, East Hampton from Moran the year it was painted, in 1903, when he was 22 years old.
