[ translate ]

Description

Gordon Richards atop Chumleigh
signed 'Earl' (lower right) and inscribed lower centre with the names of the horse and jockey
oil on canvas
69.5 x 90cm

Provenance:
Landwade Hall, Exning, Suffolk

Footnote:

Chumleigh (1934 – after 1957) was bred by Lord Glanely and trained at his Exning stables by Thomas Hogg. He was the progeny of two of Lord Glanely’s previous Classic winners, Singapore (1927 – after 1946), and Rose of England (1927 – after 1943). Chumleigh's most notable win was the 1937 St Leger Stakes.

Condition report:

86 x 106.5cm framed

Oil on canvas which appears to be unlined. The canvas tension is slack and there are undulations at the corners. Vertical stretcher bar marks have formed in the paint layers at the centre of the painting, caused by the canvas resting against the wooden stretcher behind. Drying cracks have formed in the dark paint of the horse where the paint has contracted as it dried revealing the lighter ground below. At the left hand side the age cracks are raised and pulling the canvas forward. The varnish is unevenly applied and has yellowed with age, there are darker pots of varnish and drip marks present. There is a layer of surface dirt present including fly spots.
