[ translate ]

Property of a descendant of William Beckford & The Dukes of Hamilton
Thomas Walker Bretland
Nottingham 1802 - 1874
A black stallion in a landscape

signed, inscribed and indistinctly dated lower left: Bretland / Glasgow / 184[...]
oil on canvas
unframed: 63.5 x 76.3 cm.; 25 x 30 in.
framed: 78.4 x 91 cm.; 30 7/8 x 35 7/8 in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is pretty clear. The canvas weave is visible in some of the more thinly-painted areas of the work, such as the foreground. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals small scattered spots of retouching in the foreground, some fine lines of retouching in the body of the horse, and a handful of slightly more concentrated areas in the sky. The expanse of pinkish cloud may also have been stretngthened with wash retouching. There are also retouchings around the margins. The painting is in overall good condition.

Provenance:
Possibly acquired by William, 12th Duke of Hamilton (1845-1895);
Thence by descent to his daughter, Lady Mary Louise (1884-1957), who married in 1906 James Graham (1878-1954), Marquess of Graham, who in 1925 succeeded his father as 6th Duke of Montrose;
Thence by descent.
