Thomas Wolfe PSA Certified Signed Check Payable To Liquor Store, Dated 14 Months Before His Death
DS
A check signed by American writer Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938), as "Thomas Wolfe" on the signature line. July 1, 1937. [New York, New York.] The unnumbered check directed cashiers at The Chase National Bank to pay $16.68 to the Hill Top Liquor Store. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic. Bearing the usual clerical markings, including a perforated cancellation near top center recto, and hand-stamps verso. A partially rusted paper clip impression is located recto and verso. Else very good. The actual size of the check is 6.5" x 2.75" while the slab measures 9.625" x 4.625" x .25" overall.
When he penned this check in July 1937, Wolfe was 36 years old. Sadly, he had only 14 months to live. He contracted pneumonia while in Seattle a year later, in July 1938, and was dead of miliary tuberculosis by mid-September 1938. Two other checks dating from this exact time period - the Summer of 1937 - sold at RR Auctions for $619 and $1,663 back in 2022; the first check was made payable for camera film development, and the other was for a typewriter rental.
Thomas Wolfe was heralded by contemporaries during his lifetime as one of the most talented American writers of the early 20th C. His short stories, novellas, and novels inspired the Beatniks and modern American authors.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
