Thracian Gilt Silver Bowl with Face of Silenus
Late 1st millennium BC. A sheet silver bowl with wide flange rim and turned edge, deep central bowl with repoussé lotus flower motif and central mask of Silenus with eyes closed and circlet placed eccentrically above the brow. 175 grams, 18cm (7 1/8"). Property of a London gentleman; from his great grandfather's collection formed before 1980; accompanied by a metallurgic analytical report, written by Metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford.
