Three Mola Textiles of the Cuna (Kuna) Indians, Sun Blas Island, Panama
Ca. mid-20th century, multilayer geometric and figurative multicolor design design, framed with canvas backing, depicting birds on black background, 16 ⅞" x 19 ¾"; bird among vegetation on red background, 15 ⅛" x 17 ⅝", card attached on the back; and abstract motif, 21 ¼" x 15 ⅞" image, 28 ¼" x 23" framed, label attached on the back. Hand made by Kuna women, elaborately designed and painstakingly sewn cloth panels stitched in appliqué.
Provenance: Gus and Mimi Bizic "Mola Woman" lifetime private collection, Sewickley, PA, by descent, and then to current owner; acquired at Panama in 1970, The Kapp Kuna Expedition Collection.
