Three-layered sardonic intaglio. Bust of Hercules, bearded. The hero is turned to the left, and characterized by an elongated profile and a thick beard. The precisely detailed lion skin, on his head, has been made gradually blending from the upper dark layer to the lower light one, according to a specific technical and artistic ability in exploiting the beauty of the sardonic gem. High-relief portrait, characterized by a remarkable expressiveness. Light chippings on the edge, on the side behind the character's nape; they proove to be traces of an ancient mounting-removal procedure from a a ring. Specimen recalling classic models, but keeping its own stylistic originality. 17th-18th century.
