Tiahuanaco Textile Hat w/ Fringe & Openwork Top

Pre-Columbian, Chile, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 400 to 700 CE. A fine hat of a circular form with an openwork top, a web-style top panel suspended with several thinly braided strands, tall exterior walls, and dense tassels lining the fringe. The lower periphery is adorned with a fuchsia-hued strand which imbues the hat with a pop of color. Hats made by both the Tiahuanaco and Huari cultures were comprised of camelid fibers that were skillfully prepared into yarns and then dyed in a myriad of vibrant colors. Artists from both cultures favored both minimalist styles like this example as well as those with geometric and linear motifs. Size: 6" W x 3.4" H (15.2 cm x 8.6 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s

#150914 Dimensions: Condition Report: Interior fabric lining of hat is modern and is attached for structural stability. Repair to one interior strand along central panel as well as areas of interior fringe lining, and restoration to one entire strand. Minor loosening and fraying to some original fibers. Nice original color throughout.
