Tiffany Studios
"Jesus in a Field of Lilies" Window

circa 1898
leaded glass, plated glass, "confetti" glass, wrought iron
signed "Copyright 1898, Tiffany Glass & Decorating Company, New York"
9'11" x 7'5" (frame)

The window with a spectacular natural and supernatural visual presence. The proportions, placements and glass selection immerse the window with a spacious and realistic quality that bring it to life, while maintaining the supernatural quality that Jesus Christ represents. The window depicting Jesus Christ, the Son of God, walking on water with a field of lilies behind him. The foreground displaying a body of water with vibrant green, red, blue and teal glass. A radiant and naturalistic sunset sky of orange, yellow and blue suspends above Jesus. The field of yellow and white lilies embellished with "ripple" and "confetti" glass. The scene bordered by uniformed quatrefoils and geometric panels. The arch inscribed "Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew XI, XXVIII."

Provenance:
Private Collection, Danbury, Connecticut
Condition Report: Very good overall condition. The window with approximately 40 glass pieces having cracks, mostly single line cracks in the smaller floral and drapery panels which are scattered throughout. There are five glass panels with multi-line cracks and the bottom with some minor separation to the leading. The bottom sky panel with a two-line crack and the top sky panel with a one-line crack. The blue glass panel next to the foot is a possible replacement. There are a few old minor repairs. We consider this to be an insignificant number when taking into account the thousands of individual glass pieces required to execute a window of this complexity and scale. The individual panels have been removed from the wrought iron frame for safety of transportation.
