In 1875, hoards of ancient jewelry were unearthed on the island of Cyprus and became known as the Curium Treasure. The collection was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and mesmerized the world. Tiffany & Co. was subsequently designated as sole agents for the reproduction of works belonging to the MET. The Cypriot collection was shown at the 1878 Paris Exhibition to great delight, and the demand for replicas of the ancient artifacts surged.
