Botta was a Sculptor, Poet and Professor of English Composition in New York where she hosted literary Salons that included the intellectuals of the day, including Poe, Alcott, Emerson and Carnegie..It is known that she sculpted a bust of Mr. Henry Sage, who was a trustee of Cornell college, and endowed Sage College for Women at Cornell, thus admitting the first women in 1870.It appears they had a friendship of fifty years.Later inscription at top of handle: Henry Sage Holter Nov.5, 1977.
