This work follows the composition of a painting by Titian made for the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice in 1530 which was destroyed by fire in 1867. In the place of the original is a copy by Johann Carl Loth, and there is another known copy by Géricault. There are also copperplate versions of this famous work by the Venetian master, which was highly praised by Goethe.
