To Be Sold with No Reserve
An Egyptian greywacke cosmetic palette in the form of a bird or stylised Nile boat,
Predynastic Period, 4400-3100 B.C., Egypt, with modern cartouches added later,
a loop for suspension on one end, a further loop for suspension in the middle of the straight edge, one side of the palette inscribed later with two cartouches bearing the nomen and pre-nomen of Ramses II, the palette Predynastic, the cartouches modern, 7.5 cm high x 19cm diam.
Provenance: Previously in the Private Collection of Herbert Warner (1851-1928), Les Roissignols, Hyeres, Côte d’Azur most likely acquired during his time in Egypt in 1890-1891 (based on his diary written while in Egypt which mentions his purchases of various objects during his stay). Thence by descent to his daughter Constance Marion Mansfield Clarke (1884-1964), Les Roissignols, Hyeres, Côte d’Azur. Thence by descent to her sister, and Herbert Warner’s second eldest child, Hildegard (1885-1976), Cambridge, UK, possibly from 1913, until 1976. Thence by descent to her son, Edward Herbert Vyvyan Syfret (1918-2008), 1977-2008 where it was always on display at 1 Park Parade, Cambridge, UK. Thence by descent to his wife, Anne Syfret (1927-2022), Great Abington, Cambridge, UK from 2008-2022. Thence by descent to Nicholas Syfret (b. 1954) in 2022.
