Todd's Valley Gold Rush Correspondence, Ware Family, 1854-1856.Five letters from father john Ware of Spencerburg, Missouri to his sons and daughter, 1854-1856. Two mining docs from William Ware, and one title doc from third parties for a Todd's Valley ranch. One doc of purchases by Wm Ware, Todds Valley.Todd's Valley is near Nevada City and Grass Valley. William Ware was a miner, later working at Weaverville in 1860. Hs sister Frances in mentioned in the letters. He was also engaged in various businesses in California.John Ware (1800-1887) was born in PA but lived most of his life in Spencerburg, MO, working as a farmer. His son William (1830-1896) and daughter went to California for the gold rush, landing in Todd's Valley, where he tried his hand at mining. but soon resorted back to the family business of farming in Sonoma County, where he died in 1896. One of the documents in this group does not bear the Ware name and is a property deed for a ranch, probably later purchased by one of the Wares.The letters from John discuss serious things in Missouri, including the death of a family member, as well as news that a neighbor was about to take his family to California. Provenance: for some reason, these letters were found within the W & P Nicholls Estate. Perhaps Frances married into the Nicholls family. Todds Valley California
