Tokuriki Tomikichiro (1902 - 1999) Japan
Title: Kitano Shrine
Woodblock Print
Measure 10"in H x 9 1/4"in W and 15 1/2"in H x 14"in W with frame

Kitano Shrine" (bull and supplicant), Japanese Woodblock Print, Tokuriki (1902-2000). This print is from Tokuriki's "Views of Kyoto" series. Famous for his mastery of the blending of similar colors, Tokuriki here places a fragile, solitary figure in front of a massive statue. Note Tokuriki's use of purple for the supplicant's coat and bright stripes in the bull's harness, two focusing points of color in a brooding, late winter landscape. Flowers have just budded on the otherwise stark rows of plum trees that frame the supplicant's path. The details are clear and distinct with subtly blended colors surrounding the vivid red, yellow and purple details at the center of the print. This is a strong print on light-weight paper with mild bleed-through; the image is visible on the back of the print. There are no mat lines, indicating the print has never been framed. There is minor foxing on the back that does not come through to the front. The bottom margin has been trimmed to the print, and the two side margins are narrow, indicating they may have been trimmed. The bottom right hand corner is smudged from the printing process, and there is a small tear in the margin there. This is a strong impression with good color, and will show excellently in a frame. There is a signature block and black seal in the lower left.
