[ translate ]

Tom Carlisle (American, 1904-1970) Those Things Sort of Get to Be a Habit, Des Moines Register newspaper cartoon, January 1944 India ink on heavyweight paper 19-1x2 x 14-3x4 inches (49.5 x 37.5 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Carlisle Harold I. "Tom" Carlisle joined the staff of the Des Moines Register out of college. He assisted J. N. 'Ding' Darling and created his own cartoons until Darling's retirement in 1949 when he took over as the paper's primary editorial cartoonist. His work was syndicated to newspapers across the United States. Tom Carlisle's delightful cartoon titled Those Things Sort of Get to Be a Habit was published in the Des Moines Register and newspapers throughout the United States in January 1944. Even though President Franklin D. Roosevelt declined to discuss his intentions everyone knew he was headed in the direction of running for a fourth term. In this original the "Democratic Party" nanny escorts a brood of youthful FDR's—identified as "First" through "Fourth Term"—down the street as an amused, well-dressed, cigar-smoking Republican elephant looks on in amusement and, perhaps, hope that the President's bid for the fourth term will be his undoing.
