The artist once wrote to L.D. Brinkman, "On a warmish spring day following a noon meal at the wagon on roundup, it's not unusual to see a cowboy stretched out on the ground taking a nap. However, in this situation it was an unusually productive year for wild flowers; hence Color Carpet."1 This pastel was completed in the artist's studio in Midland, Texas.
