Tom Wesselmann Nude Laser Cut Steel with Black Enamel

[ translate ]

Tom Wesselmann (American, 1931-2004). Black enamel on laser cut steel titled "Standing Nude," depicting a nude woman in outline. Signed, dated 1985, and numbered 13/50 along the verso. Published by the artist and Sidney Janis Gallery, New York. Tom Wesselman, along with Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns, was one of the leading figures of New York Pop Art. He is best known for his nudes, which utilize bright colors and simple shapes to create bold, erotic artworks. This nude is a toned down version of these iconic early nudes. In the 1980s, Wesselmann became interested in cutting metal to create drawings, utilizing negative space and thin lines of metal to create a composition. Initially created from hand-cut aluminum, Wesselmann later researched and helped to develop the first laser cutting devices for artistic use. The present lot is a work created from these innovations, blending the traditional aesthetic of drawing with brand-new technology to create a look all Wesselmann's own. Height: 22 1/2 in x width: 6 1/4 in.
