Tony Bennett | 1960 John F. Kennedy and Adlai Ewing Stevenson Dinner Program
A program for a dinner honoring John F. Kennedy thrown by Adlai Ewing Stevenson on September 14, 1960 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. The program contains political cartoons by Jules Feiffer and Robert Osborne. Kennedy and Stevenson had a tumultuous relationship during the 1960 election as Kennedy had offered Stevenson the position of Secretary of State if Stevenson endorsed him. Stevenson refused, which upset Kennedy, and then Stevenson tried to gain the Democratic Party's nomination at the last minute during the Democratic National Convention. After Kennedy was nominated, Stevenson did campaign for him but Kennedy did not forget the endorsement refusal. After being elected, Kennedy passed Stevenson over for Secretary of State and instead offered Stevenson a choice between being the US Ambassador to Britain or the US Ambassador to the United Nations. Stevenson chose the latter. Minor wear present due to age.
