Bennett played an instrumental role in helping to publicize the fundraising efforts needed to completely overhaul San Francisco's cable car system in the 1980s. The system was shut down for repairs in September of 1982 and $60 million was raised to pay for the job, through public and private fundraising. Bennett was present with then Mayor Dianne Feinstein when the California Street line re-opened on May 2, 1984.
