Very beautiful copy bound by Thouvenin of this very careful edition of "Jerusalem delivered" illustrated with a portrait of the author on the frontispiece, drawn by Chasselas and engraved by Rémi Delvaux and 20 figures out of text after Le Barbier l'Aîné .

Fine bindings signed Thouvenin executed in full glossy blond calfskin, spine with 5 bands decorated with gilded nets, casters & friezes, between the nerves of the fleurons stylized in cold, elegant framing decoration on the covers in gold and in cold with in the center a nice cold iron. Gilded roulette framing the contreplats, endpapers and contreplats of hand-marbled paper, golden roulette on the cuts, gilded edges. Slightly later bindings (around 1830s) .
Some minor foxing. Careful printing on very white laid paper. Excellent prints. Planks under serpentines.

Jean Jacques François Le Barbier, known as “Le Barbier l’Aîné” (1738-1826) , French painter, illustrator and writer.
He notably drew vignettes for Jerusalem Delivered, for the editions of Ovid, Racine, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Delille (L'imagination, poem en VIII chants, 1806, vignettes engraved by Philippe Trière) .

"Jerusalem Delivered", the most famous work of Torquato Tasso known as Le Tasso (1544 - 1595) , was completed around 1574-75, then published without his authorization in 1581 and quickly republished. It is not only an epic poem whose subject is taken from the first crusade, but it is also that of the tragic loves between Tancrède and Clorinde, between Renaud and Armide, shared between feelings and duties. It was partially translated into French in 1595 then in 1626. One of the best translations is that of Le Brun for the 1774 edition (2 vols. in-8, Paris, Musier) described by Brunet as an "elegant and faithful translation".
