[ translate ]

Title: Toshi Yoshida, Shirasagi Castle, Modern Landscape
Description: Artist: Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995)
Title: Shirasagi Castle
Date: 1942
Size: 20.4 x 17 cm
Condition: Signed by artist. Light stains on top and both sides due to old glue from previous mounting.

Toshi Yoshida was an extremely renowned artist in the sosaku-hanga movement of modern printmaking. His close relationship with his father Hiroshi Yoshida was instrumental in the pursuit of his art and produced many woodblock prints portraying natural scenes. While his niche was traditionally animals, occasionally he would produce landscape works, like the one seen here.

Himeji Castle sits on a hilltop in the city of Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. One of the finest examples of traditional castle architecture in Japan, the castle is also known as Hakuro-jo or Shirasagi-jo (White Heron Castle), because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a bird taking flight. In this print, the artist captures the beautiful silhouette of the castle from a great distance, with its imposing height dominating the surrounding area.
