Tourmaline Rubaya, Bahunde, Masisi Territory, North Kivu, DR Congo 6.9 x 1.9 x 1.7 cm (2.72 x 0.75 x 0.67 in) The mining sites around the town of Rubaya host highly transparent, colorful Tourmalines; alas, much of the material was destined for the gem-trade, making the un-cut, gemmy, specimen-quality pieces from this locality comparatively sparse treats for collectors. This is a lovely example, weighing in at 47.8 grams with no matrix or associations. The crystal is very colorful throughout, gradually alternating between watery zones of yellow, green, and red. The termination is glassy, fully transparent, and detailed with shallow indentations likely caused by once-present associations. When backlit, looking through the termination or bottom of the crystal (along the C-axis) offers a vibrant orange color throughout the field of view with mild yellow accents.
