Tourmaline Slice Malkhan pegmatite field, Krasnyi Chikoy, Krasnochikoysky District, Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia 5.5 x 4.4 x 0.3 cm (2.17 x 1.73 x 0.12 in) These thin slices of Tourmaline are often some of the best modes of viewing the intricate trigonal growths within their prismatic crystals. This is a splendid 15.4-gram representative showing a highly transparent, glassy, wine-red slice of Russian Tourmaline. Radiating from its center is a pattern of three darker zones that stretch outward towards the slice's three corners. One of these lines is much broader than its two counterparts and ends in sharp arrowhead shape, which demonstrates the abrupt transition from the crystal's earlier triangular growth to a more hexagonal pattern toward its exterior. Bordering the slice is a thin less-saturated band that gives the piece a lighter pink highlight. From the collection of John Warn [RUS1730c].
