The author, a doctor from Le Mans who was the personal physician of the Chancelier Seguier and founding member of the Academie Francaise, examines the likely relationships of animals and classifies them under the broad categories of love and hate. In terms of intelligence, he concludes that animals indeed have feelings and are able to express them.
