Tree Kazak

[ translate ]

late 19th century, 235 x 167 cm, South West Caucasus

Four white octagons lie on the central axis of the red field, flanked on both sides by four trees in white or blue-green placed one above the other, to which this type owes its name, "Tree Kazak". Small rosettes, stars and ornamental devices fill the field ground. The blue-green main border of polychrome rosettes is flanked by narrow, serrated double bands. The composition is modelled on historic garden carpets made in the workshops of North West Persia whose designs were converted into the geometric style of the Caucasus. The white boxes probably represent water basins. Herrmann published a similar example in 1980 that shows the same green rosette border.

HERRMANN, EBERHART, Von Konya bis Kokand. Seltene Orientteppiche III. Munich 1980, no. 28 *** EILAND, MURRAY L., Oriental Rugs From Pacific Collections. San Francisco 1990, no. 212 *** TSCHEBULL, RAOUL, Kazak. Carpets of the Caucasus. New York 1971, pl. 39

Condition
