The Tudor trademark was registered in 1926 by Swiss watchmaking company Veuve de Philippe Hüther on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex watches. In 1936, Wilsdorf took it over and went on to found the company Montres Tudor SA in 1946. Tudor's purpose was to offer a more affordable watch than Rolex while maintaining Rolex-like quality. Tudor watches were originally equipped with off-the-shelf movements paired with Rolex cases and bracelets, allowing Tudor to provide reliability and quality while achieving its price goals.

Tudor Submariner reference 7928 with crown guard launched in 1959. The sister brand of Rolex and their Submariner ref. 5513, the models were supplied with the identical bezel inserts and had a depth rating of 200 m. (660 ft). Reference 7928 had dials that featured the Tudor rose symbol followed by "Oyster Prince", with depth rating 200m=660ft below the hands and Submariner, Rotor, Self-Winding using 4 lines of text.

The 7928 was fitted with the caliber 390, a 17 jewels movement developed by Rolex in the 1950s for Tudor. The brand was the dive watch of choice for many armed forces of the likes of the Canadian and French navies due to their robustness and reliability.
