Twelve KPM armorial soup bowls

A set of twelve Berlin (K.P.M.) porcelain armorial soup bowls decorated with the arms of Mecklenburg-Strelitz
circa 1832-37
Centered by a crowned coat-of-arms supported by a black bull and a gilt griffon, enclosed by the chain of the Order of the Black Eagle all above a blue banner with the motto THUE RECHT UND SCHEUE NIEMAND, within a border of entwined bird of paradise flowers and leaves against a lapis lazuli blue ground, underglaze blue sceptre mark, red orb mark, blue painter's mark, impressed 17.

This set of bowls were part of the service made for Grand Duke Georg Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his wife Marie Landgräfin von Hessen-Kassel. Georg Friedrich was the brother of Queen Marie Louise of Prussia.

The Strelitzia reginae, or bird-of-paradise flower, used in the borders of these bowls was named by Sir Joseph Banks, the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, South Africa, in honor of Queen Charlotte (von Mecklenburg-Strelitz), wife of George III.

Condition Report: In overall good condition. Typical wear to gilding and decoration overall, a few with scattered light abrasions. Some showing light stacking wear to edge of bowl interiors. One bowl with a heavier wear patch to gilt border (approximately 1 x 1/4in). One bowl with chip to rim. Four bowls with some darkening to the gilding at center of armorial.
