Two 19th C. Japanese Imari Ware Pottery Bowls

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, Imari ware, ca. 19th century CE. A beautiful pair of Imari ware porcelain bowl, each intricately hand-painted nature scenes and geometric motifs. Boasting gilt details, the red bowl displays the central tondo of 3 horses on a cliffside on the interior, surrounded by 3 petal-shaped images of male scribes, and 2 more scenes of scribes on the exterior. Additional panels of geometric patterns alternate with the figural scenes on both the interior and exterior. Alternatively, the other vessel showcases colors of blue and green along with the red and white, and features depictions of butterflies, trees, and blossoming flowers. Size (both about the same): 7.5" W x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: Blue bowl has been professionally repaired with some minor chips on rim and foot. Both have light surface wear as shown, but otherwise red bowl is intact and both have excellent presentations and good remaining pigments and detail. Nice craquelure to glaze on red bowl.
