Two Chinese porcelain elephants with Ormolu mounts
Naturalistically modelled, each beast shown standing four-square, its head turned to one side with a curling trunk, the hide taupe in colour; a brightly coloured raised harness around the rump and shoulder, and a tasseled saddle-cloth decorated with bats above waves, each surmounted by a Chinese figure on tasseled cushion, on a scrolling foliage and C-scroll base. Jiaqing (1796 - 1820), mounts second half of the 19th century. Length: 33 cm, height: 40 and 43 cm.
The Chinese character for ‘elephant’ has the same pronunciation as the word ‘lucky’ or ‘auspicious’; the character for vase is a homophone for ‘peace’.
