Famed singer and actress Lena Horne was a trailblazer in the entertainment industry for over fifty years between the 1940s and 1990s. She achieved fame at a young age, beginning in the nightclub circuit at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem and quickly became a vocal sensation on both Broadway and later, in film, where she ultimately signed a long-term contract with MGM, a tremendous achievement in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s, where white actors were favored. Throughout her life, she used her fame as a platform to champion civil rights and bring awareness to the mistreatment of black soldiers in the military and the inequality black performers faced in the film, theatre and music industries.
