Two Exotic Hand-Colored and Mirrored Depictions of Animal Trainers
19th century, Continental, the hand-colored figural scenes cut and mounted between glass and a mirror back, one with a boy training a standing bear, h. 14-1/2", w. 20-1/4", and the other with a man guiding a bear ridden by a monkey, h. 19-1/4", w. 23-1/2", both presented in French rococo-style scroll-carved giltwood frames.
Provenance: Estate of Victor and Marie Cascio, Monroe, Louisiana.
Condition Report: The plate with the boy and the bear has a small tear to the bear's right forearm and a notable crease (probable repair) to the left ground edge. Plate has small scattered losses to mirror silvering. Frame has scattered losses, nicks and separation at miters. Plate with the man and the monkey has notable losses to the mirror silvering and the frame has some scratches and a loss to the upper left corner. Neither plate was examined out of its frame.
