First Empire (1804-1814)
The first with bright curved fullered blade double-edged towards the point (old light pitting, extreme tip bent), the forte over both sides etched and gilt with differing trophies and panels of foliage all against a blued ground, ormolu hilt retaining some gilding and cast with acanthus on each langet (one with small hole) and quillon terminal, knuckle-guard with a festoon along the outer side and hooked into the lion-mask pommel, and ebony grip (old splits) chequered on both sides, in its leather scabbard with brass locket and chape, the former with frog-button, the latter with shoe; the second with blade of similar form (rust patinated and light pitting overall), brass hilt comprising ovoidal langets each cast with an imperial eagle, rear quillon formed as a dog's head, knuckle-guard chased with acanthus and with a lion-mask at the top, later pommel cap, and ivory grip (chipped at the pommel) chequered on both sides, in associated steel scabbard (pitted) with two brass suspension mounts each carrying a brass ring (2)
